The first thing you need to understand is that food selection by itself, is not your first concern when it comes to body composition changes like losing fat and gaining muscle. Your body first and foremost obeys the law of thermodynamics. In plain English? The amount of energy you take in through food, minus the amount you’ll spend being alive will have an effect on your body composition:

  1. Consume less calories than you spend; you’re going to lose weight
  2. Consume more calories than you spend; you’re going to gain weight
  3. Consumption and expenditure are balanced; your weight will wait

Super simple right? Let’s move on and go over some terminology to dive a little deeper.

A=Caloric deficit

B=Caloric surplus

C=Caloric maintenance
